"Of all the new paths in life, make sure a few of them are dirt." - John Muir
After making the difficult decision to consciously take a break from the classroom in December 2021, I found myself depleted from the pushes and pulls of our society’s unrealistic expectations of educators, coupled with our world’s fast-paced, technology-obsessed, post-pandemic reality. As I struggled to find my way back to a path that felt authentic and meaningful, the motif of lighthouses continued to appear within my life. Whether it was the literal lighthouse on Ocracoke Island, or a metaphorical message given by a mentor. I continued to see lighthouses appearing within the months following my decision to leave the classroom.
In May of 2022, I was invited back to my alma mater as a keynote speaker for the Odyssey Program’s Graduation Reception. During her opening remarks, President Connie Book reminded me of Elon University’s historic motto, “Numen Lumen,”--Latin words meaning “spiritual light” and “intellectual light.” These words are found on the university’s seal and represent the highest purposes of an Elon education. Elon absolutely provided me with my numen lumen and continues to be a place where I can replenish it. Through my time at Elon, I was provided with access to higher education which opened my path to becoming an educator passionate about serving all children and their families.
The Lumen House was born with the intention of wanting to bring to life what a mindful and intentional approach to school could be for not only all students, but teachers, families, and our planet, as well. It is a metaphorical place that’s safe, comforting and inviting for all people. It shines light, guiding those who need it and sparks and fosters light to those around it. It is a space where all people can grow together in community.
